Should you buy DEMO golf equipment?

This is the time of year where all the golf shops and major box stores have ALL SORTS of amazing deals! There’s no secret that it happens every October/November. There are some great products for great prices, but is it worth it for everyone to ONLY buy demos?

Here’s the thing…it CAN be. Let’s break things down first:

PROS

-       Equipment is cheaper and it doesn’t matter if there’s a couple scratches, you’re going to make those in the first round anyway.

-       It’s a cheap way to upgrade

-       You can experiment with something new in your bag, without feeling bad that you paid full price. Maybe you’ve never tried a 7 wood before and you want to try!

CONS

-       Maybe it isn’t the right club for you, even though it’s a good deal?

-       If it’s the wrong shaft, but you get a good deal….is it still a good deal?

-       If it’s the wrong lie angle for irons, they could hurt your game more than help.

Here’s where my opinion lies:

I think there’s a time and a place for getting a great deal on golf equipment. The games expensive! If this helps you upgrade you clubs, go for it! BUT!!! BUT!!!

For gosh sake people….GET FIT FIRST!!! You better know what clubs are best for your game before you go buy a new one just because it’s a good deal! YES, equipment specs matter like you wouldn’t believe. GET FIT!!!

Recently I had a conversation with someone who “Got a smoking deal” on a new set. Awesome! His next question was “Can you fit me for them now?”

Sure I can! Here’s the down side… you bought clubs with senior flex graphite iron shafts, and senior flex wood shafts. You swing the club at 100 miles an hour with a driver and 70 miles an hour with a 7 iron. SO when I fit you, you’re not going to like that I recommend different shafts which is going to cost you probably $1000 to do the whole set. On top of that, you bought a 12 degree driver…and need a 9 degree. Sooooooooooo, ya. Glad you got a good deal.

I’m not a salesman type club fitter. I want what's right in your bag to help you play the best. Obviously my business sells golf equipment and I’d be happy to help you with equipment purchases, but at the end of the day It makes me happy knowing that a golfer has the right gear. So look for a good deal where you can, but MAKE SURE THE CLUBS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU!!!!
