Qi4D from Taylormade - Is this the one?!

The golf gear world is buzzing because TaylorMade has quietly introduced a new driver family: the Qi4D line (including Qi4D, Qi4D LS, and Qi4D Max). Though it hasn’t been formally launched in the retail channel (as of this writing), the clubs have been listed on the USGA conforming list — a strong signal that the brand is gearing up for full release.

Before we have extensive hands-on reviews, here’s what we do know, what can be reasonably speculated, and why it matters—especially considering that two of TaylorMade’s biggest players, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, were both spotted on the range this week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship testing variants of the new gear.

Here’s what we know:

  • The Qi4D family hit the USGA conforming list just ahead of the Abu Dhabi event. The models listed are: standard Qi4D, Qi4D LS (low spin version), and Qi4D Max (for maximum forgiveness). The same models they have had for a few years now. Fairly standard.

  • Rory McIlroy was seen testing/using the standard Qi4D in practice rounds. This would be very similar to the Qi10 Core head he used last year. Tommy Fleetwood was seen using the Qi4D LS version (low-spin variant) during the same event. Similar to the Qi35 LS head he’s used.

  • McIlroy reportedly commented he was pleased with the new driver. HUGE after the Qi35 not being in the bag last year for Rors.

  • Two 4 g weights in the head (heel + toe) and an unseen back‐weight port feature in the standard Qi4D model. The LS model appears to have a 15 g forward weight plus a back weight port (for lower spin / penetrating trajectory). There are multiple loft options (approx 8°-12°) listed for the Qi4D family.

Here’s what we have heard in hush words throughout the internet:

  • There may be an aerodynamic play with this years models. More club

head speed from aerodynamics means the ball goes further.

  • White markings on the face permanently. Last year Taylormade hit on the fitting aspect focusing on fitting for closure rate. The launch monitor enabled heads were only available form reps or specific fitting accounts. This year all drivers could have that technology!

THE BIG QUESTION!!! Will it be better and is it something you need to go buy?! TEST my friends! That’s what I can say for certain is TEST! Get a proper fitting (Preferably with us here at The Fitting Lab!) and make sure to take your current gamer in with you. If there is a big change In ball speed and dispersion then it’ll be worth it. If there isn’t… then that’s a choice you’ll have to make.

I’m excited to test them out and see what happens!
