Change your game Challenge!

Writer's picture: Garrett McMillanGarrett McMillan

Ok, So January is usually all about the gym and losing weight or getting healthy. It still might be! I know I could use a few LB’s off my gut! Everything in life is related to golf though, right? So let’s think about golf! This is the time to start making improvements with your golf game in a big way. Here’s why:

(Stick with me until the end here!)

There is No Consequence to a Bad Shot in Winter.

Even if you hit a horrible shot, the ball hits the screen and it's still right in front of you. So now is the time to make awkward feeling swing changes that you will struggle to commit to on the golf course. Struggle now! Thrive in the summer!

Simulator Feedback

On the driving range you’re going too (Unless you’re working with someone with a launch monitor, or you’ve bought one!) you wont have feedback about club face, path or other metrics that will help you change your swing. If you’re just swinging for the sake of swinging then your road to improvement is pretty long! With feedback, you’ll make it a much quicker process!

Your Bucket Doesn’t Empty

Swing as long as you want without finishing your bucket. On the other side, if you’ve felt like you put in a good session, there isn’t 20 golf balls looking back at you like you’ve wasted money! Get your practice session in and feel good about it!

Access to Help is Easy With Online Lessons or in Person Lessons!

Get a second set of eyes! It'll help your game more than you know! I get it, things are expensive, so maybe online lessons are the way to go. Cheaper, a little less personal but they are great! For $90 a month you could get 4 digital lessons from videos you upload! Cheap! Check it out! Regardless of how you get your lessons, it's worth it! Take them!

NOW I'M CHALLENGING YOU!

Here’s my personal story for a minute. I love the game of golf but since becoming a golf professional I play less and less. I practice less and less. It’s made me dislike the game at times because my game isn’t where I want it to be. I enjoy playing in competitions but I hate embarrassing myself on the golf course, which in turn actually makes me more stressed and play worse! I'm my own worst enemy sometimes. It's time to make a change and work on my game.

Now I’m taking my own challenge in hopes that my game improves and that I feel good about my golf game again! It’s time! Maybe I’ll lose a few pounds too this month (but chocolate is sooooo good).

The Challenge
  • 2 Hours of practice a week for 6 weeks
    • Switch this up. Don’t just hit drivers and 7 irons.
  • 2 stretching sessions per week for 6 weeks
BONUS:
  • Workout 3 times a week
  • 1 hour of wedge practice inside 100 yards per week
  • Get a club fitting and see how your clubs stack up against something new
  • Take a golf lesson

I’m going to do my best, and you should too! If you’ve read this far and I hope you’ve though about the idea. Below is a template for you to print and keep track of your progress. Use it and check off everything you have accomplished as you go. Tag me on Instagram throughout the process @gmac72 and at the end of 6 weeks, if you’ve done it…I have a special prize for you! Come find me at First Tee. GAME ON!
